More than a year after its initial release, Sony has rolled out a significant feature enhancement for the PlayStation Portal handheld. Users of the PlayStation Portal can now take advantage of Sony’s Cloud Streaming service, enabling them to play select PlayStation 5 titles on the device.
Initially, the PlayStation Portal was limited to streaming from a PlayStation 5 console located in the same home. With this recent update, beta access to PlayStation 5 cloud streaming is now available. However, this feature is restricted to those who join the beta program and have a subscription to Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium service.
Unfortunately, this beta currently supports only a limited selection of games. Streaming for PS4 and PS3 titles is not available. Furthermore, not every PlayStation 5 game can be streamed from the cloud, and functionalities such as Party Voice Chat, 3D Audio, and in-game purchases are not supported. Streaming will be offered at a maximum resolution of 1080p.
Features included in the Beta:
With this beta release, PlayStation Portal users will be able to enhance their experience with the device. Currently, the Portal is only functional when a PlayStation 5 is connected to the same Wi-Fi network. With the introduction of Cloud Streaming, users can take their Portal anywhere and enjoy cloud gaming. In the future, we anticipate Sony will implement full Cloud Streaming capabilities for their handheld device, greatly increasing its usefulness for travelers.
