Rockstar and Remedy announce Max Payne 1 and 2 remasters

It’s all about the nostalgia this year as Remedy Games announced last Wednesday that they will be working on remasters of both their legendary games, Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. The games will come out for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. Rockstar Games, the current holder of franchise rights, will be providing the funding for both games, “the size of which will be in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production,” according to the press release.

Rockstar Games found Sam Houser also has this to say:

“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games. “We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”

The games will be released as a single package and will be built on Rockstar’s Northlight Engine. It will be interesting to see Max Payne’s Bullet Time mode on the same engine used for Control and the upcoming Alan Wake 2.

Max Payne follows the exploits of undercover cop Max Payne, whose face is humorously based on Remedy writer and designer Sam Lake. Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, he seeks revenge on those who killed his family while investigating a conspiracy behind a new drug known as Valkyr. In Max Payne 2, Max is entangled in a plot with the enigmatic assassin Mona Sax, the Russian Mob, and Senator Alfred Woden.

So far, there’s no announced target release date yet as Remedy is still in the early concept phase of development. Hopefully, it won’t go the way of GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Collection. Rockstar Games phased out the original GTA: The Trilogy games upon release of the Definitive Edition, to the dismay of fans who discovered how buggy the latter was.
