Qualcomm teases high-performance Snapdragon desktop CPUs, set for November reveal

Qualcomm, known for its popular range of Snapdragon mobile chips, appears to be gearing up to make a major announcement in the coming months. After equipping top-notch VR headsets for gaming and releasing a developer-only mini PC earlier this year, the company seems prepared to compete in the desktop CPU market.

During the launch of the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus ahead of the IFA show in Berlin, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon was asked about the potential for a desktop Snapdragon chip. Below is Amon's comments regarding Qualcomm Desktop processors were transcribed by PCWorld from IFA 2024.

"The first thing that we did, we launched [Snapdragon] X Elite. Then we launched the X Plus, plus the 10-core. Today, we’re launching the 8-core Plus to try to get at different price points. You’re going to see us with a lot of designs on desktops, mini desktops, and eventually, you won’t be surprised of us still thinking about high-performance desktop. We are on this journey. As I said, we’re here to stay."

He also mentioned that he would provide more details at an investor conference in November, where he will discuss the future of the Snapdragon platform. “Stay tuned for November,” he said.

By November, Qualcomm's desktop CPU will be going up against AMD's Ryzen 9000 chips and Intel's Arrow Lake. The market is highly competitive, with strong contenders, and since the full details of these upcoming chips are still unknown, it makes Qualcomm's entry into this space even more challenging.

Will socketed desktop Qualcomm CPUs and motherboards eventually become a reality? Could Qualcomm emerge as a major player in the realm of PC gaming? Only time will tell. And while awaiting the answers, you can also explore our comparator to find the best deals on your next favorite game.
