New World is having a spectacular launch

We already knew that many players were waiting for Amazon's new MMORPG. The New World open beta testing event that took place ahead of the release showed that all its servers were full and with sizeable queues of players waiting to get into the game. Therefore, it's no surprise that yesterday's launch attracted a massive number of players, even if it was mid-week. As soon as the servers were open, the influx of players started growing, and a few minutes later, there were already queues on most servers. The waiting times were much shorter than during the beta, though.

Today servers continue struggling to keep up with the players' demand, and we know that New World is already one of the most successful launches on Valve's platform. It has become the second most-played game on Steam, surpassed only by the ever-present Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Over half a million concurrent players were exploring Aeternum island yesterday soon after the game was available, and that number peaked at over 700,000. It's likely that it keeps increasing and will surpass a million players through the weekend.

The current situation of other MMORPGs may have had an impact on the success of New World. World of Warcraft is not in its best moment, and Guild Wars 2 and Final Fantasy XIV are waiting for a new expansion. Amazon has chosen the best moment to launch the game as many players were looking for a new home, and they have probably found it in New World, which seems to have all everything needed to become the biggest launch of the year. Only time will tell if it keeps growing and manages to become the most played game in the genre.
