The Game Awards 2022 has kicked off with several announcements, one of which has proven bittersweet. The inimitable voice actor Kevin Conroy, who died last month after a bout with cancer, has been announced to play his most iconic role of Batman one more time in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. You can see the announcement trailer here:
In the video, the Suicide Squad—composed of supervillains Deadshot, King Shark, Captain Boomerang, and Harley Quinn—have kidnapped and are currently torturing the Flash when mind-controlled Batman appears and takes out a guard. The scene ends with Conroy declaring Batman’s signature quote: “I am vengeance. I am the night.”
While it’s an exciting thought that we’ll get to fight a boss battle against an evil Batman using the shadows against you, it’s bittersweet to consider that this will be the last time we’ll hear Conroy voicing the Dark Knight in a game. Conroy has provided Batman’s voice for two dozen games, especially for the Arkham universe, of which Suicide Squad is a part. He also voiced Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne in numerous animated shows and movies since 1992, meaning Conroy has played the character more than any other actor ever.
As for Suicide Squad, it’s confirmed for release on May 23, 2023. The game has gone through several delays this past year, with the last one landing in the Spring of next year, after the release of the unrelated Gotham Knights game. Suicide Squad will allow up to four players to join via co-op, with the AI taking over characters not under player control.
Suicide Squad will feature a band of criminals fighting against a Justice League controlled by the supervillain Brainiac. Superman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and now Batman have been confirmed to be antagonists, with Wonder Woman seemingly playing a wild card.
