Intel loses desktop CPU market share to AMD

The CPU market is witnessing a dramatic shift as AMD gradually closes the gap with Intel, even posing a potential threat to this long-standing industry leader. The latest report shows that AMD captured nearly 30% of the desktop CPU market share in Q3 2024, marking substantial growth compared to the same period last year.

Intel’s 13th and 14th generation Raptor Lake CPUs have received continuous complaints from users regarding stability issues, which is seen as the primary reason driving many to switch to AMD processors.

Meanwhile, AMD has seized this opportunity to make strides with its powerful and stable Ryzen 9000 series CPUs. As a result, AMD’s desktop CPU market share increased by 5.7% from the previous quarter and 10% compared to the same period last year, reaching 28.7%. Although Intel still holds over 70% of the market, its dominant position is under serious threat. If Intel doesn’t promptly address the stability issues with its Raptor Lake CPUs, it may have to “cede the throne” to AMD in the not-so-distant future.

Beyond the desktop CPU market, AMD is also excelling in several other areas. AMD products currently dominate the best-seller lists on Amazon, and the company supplies CPUs for major gaming consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series, as well as handheld devices like the ROG Ally.

While AMD surpassing Intel is a significant development, Nvidia's growth in the datacenter industry has been remarkable. Nvidia's AI accelerators hold a dominant position in the AI and HPC markets, driving substantial growth for the company. Notably, Nvidia's networking revenue alone has exceeded the datacenter revenue of both Intel and AMD. Additionally, this figure excludes Nvidia's GPU and compute sales. It's worth remembering that Nvidia sold $42 billion worth of AI/HPC GPUs in just the first half of this year, making AMD and Intel's datacenter sales appear minor in comparison.

The battle between Intel and AMD is becoming increasingly intense. Can Intel defend its "crown," or will AMD overpower its rival and take control of the CPU market? The answer will become clearer in the coming months. And as always, while waiting for more exciting news, remember to use our comparison tool to find the best deal for your next favorite game.
