Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga reveals jaw-dropping gameplay trailer

The Game Awards 2021 caused quite a stir this year with its parade of winners and game reveals, but among the most impressive is the gameplay trailer for Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga. Previously announced last 2019, the sequel to the critically-acclaimed indie action game gets the blood pumping with a fiercer, more bloodthirsty Senua.

Here we see Senua, armed to the teeth and accompanied by a battalion of fellow Picts, hunting what seems to be an injured giant in a seaside cave. We have no clue what the significance of this is and if it has to do with the Norsemen who killed Senua’s lover in the first game. We’ll just have to wait and see.

What’s impressive about the trailer is that we’re seeing not cinematics but actual gameplay footage. The original Hellblade wowed players with its graphics, so it’s great to see that Ninja Theory has surpassed their already impressive visual work—the restless ocean, the slickness of water on stone, the looks of fear and panic on Senua and her cohorts when their assault falls apart—everything looks genuine and captivating. To casual observers, the trailer seems like it's for an animated film.

An even more impressive thing about the trailer is that despite suffering from psychosis, Senua is seen leading a force of seasoned warriors, men and women who would follow her till death. The first game was credited for its careful portrayal of mental illness. The sequel ups the ante for inclusivity by showing people like Senua in a position of leadership and social importance.

In case you missed the announcement trailer in 2019, here it is again:
