Getting immersed in the criminal underworld of the 1930s was quite an appealing opportunity for many players when the first Mafia video game was released in 2002. It has rained a lot since then, and the series has evolved along several installments, each with its own protagonist and storyline. All of them share gameplay mechanics and a distinct style that has turned Mafia into a cult series. The recent release of Mafia: Definitive Edition, Mafia II: Definitive Edition, and Mafia: Trilogy has brought back the series to the headlines as Hangar 13 has done great work by modernizing the overall aspect of the games and enhancing the gameplay with new features and tweaks.
The long-lived series still has a lot to offer according to a recent announcement from the publisher 2K Games. General manager Roman Hladík has revealed that a new Mafia game is in the works. The rumor has been circulating for a while but now it's official, although you better not expect to see images of it anytime soon as it will probably need a few years to be finished.
"I'm happy to confirm we've started work on an all-new Mafia project! While it's a few years away and we can't share anything more right now, we're really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories."
Following the progression seen in previous games, the new Mafia may be set in a completely different scenario. In any case, we will have to wait a bit longer to know more about the game, even though some rumors already say that the game will use the Unreal Engine to deliver a completely different type of experience.
If you don't know the series yet, you can get yourself a copy of the original Mafia on Steam this week. the game will be available for free from September 1 to September 5 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise.
