FIFA 23 will be the last installment in the series

FIFA is the most important football video game series of all time. Its long-time rivalry with Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer came to an end when Konami finally let go of most of the official licenses and decided to go free-to-play. Everything indicated that FIFA 22 would be the undisputed leader in the genre this year, and the numbers confirm it. But it seems that EA is having problems with its FIFA license, and the company has not been able to renew it.

A few months ago, we knew that FIFA was asking a bit too much for the license, and it seems that this situation has continued. The result is that EA has decided to drop the FIFA name and go for EA Sports FC instead of paying a huge sum every year to be able to use the old name. The series has been running since 2013, and FIFA 23 will be the last installment, at least with that name. The contract between both parties expires on December 31, 2022, so EA will have enough time to squeeze in another game before changing the name.

It's likely that all this won't have any impact on any other aspect of the game, as we are sure that EA will continue to license most teams and competitions currently featured in FIFA 22, but it's definitely a huge change for the franchise. Electronic Arts shouldn't worry about some other company taking over the name, though. After all, paying 860 million euros over four years is not something that many publishers can afford.

In any case, you can still enjoy playing FIFA 22 ahead of the release of the last FIFA. The game offers you one of the best football simulation experiences in the genre and more licensed teams and international competitions than any other sports title.
