Koei Tecmo’s Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse remaster is launching on March 9. Also known as Project Zero in Europe, this will be the first time we’ll see a Western official release of Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, as the original game was exclusive only to the Wii. The game will feature enhanced graphics and will release across a wide array of platforms. See the story trailer here:
The story follows Ruka, a young lady who was rescued along with four other girls from a serial killer on the island of Rougetsu. Years later, Ruka discovers that two of the other victims have died under mysterious circumstances. Ruka decides to look for the remaining girls who have gone missing on the island.
Before Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, Koei Tecmo had previously adapted and released another game, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Dark Water. In a recent interview by Nintendo Everything with game director Makoto Shibata, he relates why Koei Tecmo decided to remaster this game in particular.
“When we released the remastered version of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water in 2021, it thankfully caught the attention of many people and we received a wide range of feedback. We were able to feel firsthand that there are people all over the world who would like to see more titles in the series released, and we wanted those who first discovered Fatal Frame through Maiden of Black Water to further experience the allure of Japanese-style horror.
We then decided to remaster Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, which was the title that received a particularly large number of requests for a remaster. The same reason applies to localization for English-speaking audiences. We believe that localizing the game for that region is essential to reach a wider audience.”
Every Fatal Frame game has repeating elements: a female protagonist. A haunted area in the Japanese countryside. Dark legends and unholy rituals. The Camera Obscura, your only weapon against the deadly ghosts. And of course, lots of alternate costumes for its female protagonists. In fact, here’s a trailer specifically dedicated to that:
As a bonus, those who have save data from Fatal Frame: Maiden of Dark Water will get a special costume.
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse comes out this March 9 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam. You can pre-order a Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse PC key from our comparator.
