Fallout's popularity skyrockets following TV series premiere

A few days ago we said that the next-gen patch for Fallout 4 arrived just in time for the premiere of the Fallout TV series on Amazon Prime Video but the latest instalment in the main video game series is not the only one that has benefitted from it. The number of players immersed in the Fallout universe has increased exponentially since the TV show became available. The number of concurrent players in Fallout 76, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4 on Steam is higher than ever. Fallout 4 has reached a peak of 83,000 concurrent players throughout the weekend, which is more than triple the previous number. Also, Fallout 76 has set a new record with almost 40,000 players on Valve's platform.

Double the players, double the fun

The numbers provided by Steam DB prove that the number of players in Fallout games has doubled on average. Bethesda Softworks can be really happy about this as the longlived post-apòcalyptic franchise is now more popular than ever. A similar thing happened to CD Projekt Red with Edgerunners, the animation series on Netflix inspired by Cyberpunk 2077. Following its release, the popularity of the game went through the roof and this greatly helped to bring the game to where it is now alongside the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion. Something similar happened with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Video games have proven to be a great source of inspiration for TV series and we will surely see more coming in the future due to the success of Fallout and others. However, some developers are totally against that. Dragon Age's former lead writer David Gaider, for example, has stated that it would be a very bad idea:

"You take away the interactive element and you're left with a pretty stock standard fantasy story. It would take a pretty deep dive to distil the elements of each that make them unique."

This doesn't seem to be the case with Fallout as the number of players exploring the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the series continues to increase daily. If you have yet to discover the Fallout universe, you should use our comparator to find out the best deals on Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Fallout: New Vegas. Also, classics like Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, and Fallout Tactics offer you a different approach to the franchise.
