Dragon Age: The Veilguard features difficulty levels for every player

BioWare stated that their goal is to make Dragon Age: The Veilguard as inclusive as possible, both in terms of narrative and gameplay. In an interview with Game Informer, game director Corinne Busche discussed their efforts in making Dragon Age: The Veilguard inclusive and touched on the subject of the game's difficulty. Overall, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will feature four difficulty levels: Storyteller, Adventurer, Nightmare, and Unbound.

Storyteller is aimed at players who want to enjoy the story and lore of Dragon Age without committing to the strategy, customization, and action-oriented gameplay of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Essentially, it's the RPG's easy mode. Adventurer is considered the normal mode and presents a perfect balance between story and combat, which is likely the difficulty that the game designers modeled the game on. Nightmare is the hard mode for players who want to test the challenges in their most brutal form.

Lastly, the Unbound difficulty is modular and allows players to customize various modifiers to tailor a personal difficulty. For example, among the options, there is an auto-aim system for those who don't want to put their shooting skills to the test. There's also an option to adjust the combat timing to make parrying easier or more difficult. Some modifiers define how much damage a player deals to monsters and how much damage monsters deal to players, and it will even be possible to turn off death, turning the Rook into an immortal avatar.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard offers four difficulty levels

Director Corinne Busche says these options are not cheats, just a way to make the game accessible to players of all skill levels. The report on Dragon Age: The Veilguard came at a time when the community was heatedly debating game difficulties again, especially in games from FromSoftware. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the first DLC for Elden Ring, was recently released and faced criticism from many players due to its high difficulty. On the one hand, many older fans of FromSoftware said this is something to be expected from any of their games, where the DLCs always present more challenging content than the base game. On the other hand, as Elden Ring was a sales phenomenon and attracted new players to the Soulslike genre, the 2022 GOTY didn't escape criticism.

Regardless of how you feel about difficulties in games, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is unwavering in its commitment to inclusivity. It will allow players of all experiences to enjoy the RPG, fulfilling its promise. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is coming next fall for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
