Yesterday we could finally watch the official reveal of the new installment in the Battlefield series. Electronic Arts finally revealed the new game, that will appear under the name Battlefield 2042, and also published its first video. But beyond the announcement, yesterday's reveal has also been the source of a lot of information about the upcoming game. The first thing that comes to our attention is that Battlefield 2042 leaves behind all the historical connections from previous titles to focus on the near future. No World War II, no classic theatres of war. Instead of that, the game takes an approach to warfare how it will be 20 years ahead, with technology being a very important part of it but without going too deep into a futuristic sci-fi scenario.
There's been a lot of speculation about the kind of content that Battlefield 2042 would feature, and most of the predictions have been wrong. The game will follow the line of previous installments in the series and it won't feature a single-player campaign mode, focusing exclusively on massive multiplayer battles for up to 128 players on PC and next-gen consoles, and 64 players on PS4 and Xbox One. You won't have to worry about a lack of players though, because it will be possible to play against AI-controlled bots too. Another possibility that was in everyone's minds was that Battlefield 2042 would feature a battle royale mode, but it's been confirmed that it's not among DICE's plans for the game right now.
Battlefield 2042 will offer us a narrative-driven world that will evolve after launch through different seasons. The game will follow a live service structure, pretty much like its predecessor. Regarding other features like crossplay or some free-to-play experience similar to Warzone for Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War, the developer has opted not to go into detail yet, but the door is definitely not closed to them. When it comes to crossplay it may be difficult as different platforms will feature different map sizes.
If you want to immerse yourself in the world of Battlefield 2042, the release of the game is scheduled for October 22 on PC. PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Check out the best prices for Battlefield 2042 on our video games price comparison site!
