Assassin's Creed Shadows will use Denuvo

Ubisoft seems to be obsessed with shooting itself on its foot when it comes to Assassin's Creed Shadows. First, the studio delayed the release date of the game shortly after announcing the game, leaving the fans quite disappointed in the process. The rush to announce an initial release date for a game that, in the end, wasn't really to be released may be understandable given the poor results of Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft's results have not been good recently, with releases like Skull and Bones, which have not contributed to making the situation any better. However, it seems that the developer and publisher continue to make things that do not help to increase the popularity of its games.

Was it essential?

According to Assassin's Creed Shadows page on Steam, we know that the game will be using Denuvo when it's released on February 14, 2025. This is rather surprising, considering that Denuvo seems to be quite unpopular for a sizeable community. Many players complain about the performance issues it supposedly causes when playing games, and there is always a certain controversy when a game announces that it's using it. In this case, Assassin's Creed Shadows is no different, but the important question is if Ubisoft can afford it after all the drama it's been going through recently.

It's easy to understand that the developer studio prefers to release Assassin's Creed Shadows in its best version because it would end up putting Ubisoft in a terrible situation otherwise. The cost of delaying the game is not trivial in terms of reputation, but a bad release that does not meet the expectations of the fans could be much worse. However, stirring up a hornets' nest may not be the best idea right now, and the Denuvo announcement will surely upset some players. It's more about the noise those players can make than the potential impact of them not buying the game in the future. In any case, we can't stop wondering if it shouldn't have been avoided.

In any case, the polishing process of Assassin's Creed Shadows continues and there are no hints about another possible delay. If everything goes as planned, this new Assassin's Creed game set in Japan will be available to play in about two months from now.
