The revamped version of Anthem has been canceled

It's been a couple of years already since Anthem was released and this time has been more than enough to see the rise and downfall of such an anticipated game. What was meant to become one of BioWare's flagships and their first attempt at creating a new franchise that would compete with the Mass Effect series in a futuristic setting, has ended becoming the greatest failure of the developer. A number of reasons have led to such an outcome, but the main one is that Anthem failed to fulfill the expectations of the players with its gameplay and content. Combat wasn't rewarding enough, the progression system was a bit shallow and the game was plagued with loading screens, and moving from one menu to another felt like an insufferable chore. Even worse, the developers failed to deliver the post-launch content that the game needed so much because they were trying to fix all those issues.

All of this caused that the players to progressively abandon Anthem, leaving the game as an empty husk in just a few months. Even though BioWare promised to continue working on the game and revamp several aspects of the gameplay to make it more appealing to the players, the announced Anthem Next version will never arrive. It has been announced in an official statement that also reveals that the developer is putting their resources into delivering the best possible experience with the upcoming installments in the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series.

In the spirit of transparency and closure we wanted to share that we’ve made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (aka Anthem NEXT). We will, however, continue to keep the Anthem live service running as it exists today.

Decisions like these are not easy. Moving forward, we need to laser focus our efforts as a studio and strengthen the next Dragon Age, and Mass Effect titles while continuing to provide quality updates to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Therefore, if you want to continue to enjoy the great narrative experience that BioWare offers in other games, we encourage you to give a try to Dragon Age: Inquisition and also Mass Effect: Legendary Edition when it becomes available on May 14th.
