AMD's upcoming X3D processors are set to launch on November 7th, poised to challenge Intel's Arrow Lake

Just days ahead of the launch of Intel’s Core Ultra 200 “Arrow Lake” processors, AMD has teased the forthcoming launch of its first Ryzen 9000 series X3D gaming processor.

AMD has not disclosed any specific information regarding these new processors, though they have embraced the tagline “X3D Reimagined”. This implies that AMD has implemented significant modifications to their X3D technology. However, it remains uncertain what exactly has been altered. The X3D designation signifies AMD’s Extended 3D Technology, which effectively adds an extra cache layer to the package.

This enhancement allows the processor to retain more data before accessing system memory. While RAM continues to progress with DDR5 modules, nothing surpasses the benefits of local cache on a CPU. The more cache available, the better the game performance when matched with a capable graphics card. Until now, AMD had not released a Ryzen 9000 CPU featuring a 3D V-cache.

Previous X3D processors are widely recognized as top contenders for gaming CPUs. Even Intel has acknowledged the performance of these processors when contrasting its products with competitors. Aiming for higher frame rates enables the CPU to fully utilize the additional cache. With Arrow Lake on the horizon, AMD is solidifying its dominance in the gaming sector.

This new chip is expected to fit between the AMD Ryzen 7 and AMD Ryzen 9, establishing a new optimal choice within the Ryzen 9000 family for gamers. If the leaks hold true, AMD should enhance clock speeds and overall performance, particularly outside of gaming scenarios. This has historically been a weak point for AMD's X3D CPUs, which excelled in gaming but struggled to match Intel in other benchmarks. We hope to see a more well-rounded launch on November 7, when the new processor is set to be available.
