Diablo III: Reaper of Souls is the first major expansion pack for Blizzard's blockbuster dungeon crawling RPG that takes place throughout the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary.
After Diablo's defeat, Tyrael recovers the Black Soulstone that contains the essence of all seven of the Great Evils. Knowing it is too dangerous to leave it in the hands of mortals or angels, he and six Horadrim take the Black Soulstone back to Sanctuary and attempt to seal it away where it can never be found. However, the group is ambushed by Malthael, former Archangel of Wisdom. Now calling himself the "Angel of Death", Malthael kills all but one of the Horadrim and incapacitates Tyrael, and takes the Black Soulstone. So begins the end of all things...
Reaper of Souls adds a number of new features to the core gameplay of Diablo III. In addition to the campaign, the expansion adds an "Adventure Mode", where players are free to roam the entire world and take on random bounties and dungeons (called "Nephalem Rifts") at their leisure. A fifth Act is added, which follows the Nephalem's quest through the remains of Westmarch and the Pandemonium Fortress to stop Malthael and his allies. The expansion also raises the level cap to 70 (up from 60), and adds new skills, runes, and passive abilities for all characters, and adds a fourth slot for passive skills that unlocks when the player reaches level 70.
Reaper of Souls will also introduce a new artisan, a Mystic named Myriam. She will be able to Enchant and Transmogrify items. The enchanting allows players to re-roll one of the properties of a rare or legendary class item for another, possibly better random property. Transmogrification gives players the ability to modify the appearance of their armor and weapons without compromising any of their power or potency.
Character Classes:
Barbarian: The Barbarian is a massive, heavily-armed warrior, a wanderer from a tribe that once guarded the sacred Mount Arreat. His brute strength allows him to wield mighty two-handed weapons, a weapon in both hands, or a weapon and shield. Builds up Fury when taking or dealing damage and then unleashes it in devastating attacks.
Demon Hunter: The Demon Hunter is the survivor of a demonic attack who has dedicated body and soul to rid the world of the demons that threaten Sanctuary. Remains mobile with avoidance powers, and snares enemies in place with careful traps and uses long-range weaponry like grenades, bows, and crossbows. Relies on Hatred, a swiftly regenerating inner fire, and Discipline, a moderate reservoir of marksmanship skill.
Monk: The Monk is a holy warrior whose body has been honed into a deadly weapon. He calls upon the power of his thousand and one gods to protect, shield, heal, and banish. Uses fists and unique melee weapons, like punch daggers and monk staves. Generates Spirit, an inner strength that fuels the monk’s mobility and dodging in combat.
Witch Doctor: The Witch Doctor weaves the power of the spirits of the Unformed Land, summoning creatures from beyond the grave. Summons frightful undead, vermin, and other creatures for protection and offense. Uses destructive poison, acid, and fire attacks. Powers spells and summons with Mana, a slow-accruing but deep well of energy.
Wizard: The Wizard is an arcane prodigy who commands time and the elements in the pursuit of destiny and power. Wields arcane magics, manipulating space, time, and the elemental and mystic elements. Freezes, incinerates, and restrains foes. Invokes magic rapidly with Arcane Power, a quickly-regenerating reservoir of power.
Crusader: The Crusader is a mid-range melee class wielding a flail or sword and a shield and uses battle magic to strengthen allies and weaken foes with mid-ranged spells that need Wrath as energy resource.
The Collector's Edition contains a bunch of goods consisting of a disc copy of the expansion on both Mac and Windows PC; a soundtrack CD; a two-disc "Behind the Scenes" Blu-ray/DVD set; and a hardcover copy of The Art of Reaper of Souls.
Also, Collector's Edition will grant a few in game exclusive items for three different Blizzard games: the Spectral Hound minion, ageless helms and Malthael-inspired weapons for Diablo 3; the Treasure Goblin pet for World of Warcraft; and Crusader portraits and Malthael decals for StarCraft 2.
