The first-person shooter video game developed by EA DICE and published by Electronic Arts, Battlefield V is the sixteenth installment in the Battlefield series that began with Battlefield 1942, a game that was critically praised for its massive multiplayer battles involving small arms, armored vehicles, and aircraft. The game will continue on from its precursor by focusing on World War II. At its core is the concept of the squad, players that can cooperate and coordinate together to achieve goals in-game.
Battlefield 5's solo campaign, War Stories, will be telling the tales of men and women around the Globe that found themselves meshed in the second World War. There are four War Stories in total, Nordlys, Under No Flag, Tirailleur, and The Last Tiger (due post-launch), with the first following a female resistance fighter in Norway, as she battles "for her country's liberation from occupying forces, but also her family's survival". Under No Flag focusses on a young British criminal tasked with destroying German air bases in the North African desert, and Tirailleur follows Senegalese units of the French Colonial Forces as they fight to "liberate the French 'homeland' that they've never even seen before". War Stories' final offering switches perspective to the German side as World War 2 nears its end. "A lone Tiger tank crew begins to question the ideology that got them to this point" is the key story here.
As with all Battlefield games, the main focus of Battlefield V is competitive multiplayer, and there are a lot of options and modes, as well as four classes to suit any game style. 8 maps will be available at launch, no season pass and all post-launch maps will be released completely free to all players.
Classic Battlefield modes like Conquest, Domination, and Team Deathmatch return in Battlefield V, and they’re joined by a number of other options for anyone looking to switch up the action.
Conquest features a map divided into multiple sectors and the main goal of both factions is to control the majority of flags scattered around the entire map. Squad tickets are important - both sides start with 800 tickets each. The game ends when one of the factions runs out of their tickets (or when the time runs out, the team with more tickets wins). To reduce the number of tickets you have to capture more flags than your enemy (Ticket Bleed mechanic). Capture more flags to make your enemy lose their tickets faster. Remember that a player's death costs one ticket. You can save your team from losing a ticket by reviving a wounded played that will be carried on the back of a friendly player.
In Grand Operations, which plays teams against each other over several days, the matches are shaped by your previous performance. Airborne begins with your team leaping out of a plane and landing on the battlefield to “spearhead an upcoming invasion,” while Frontlines is a back-and-forth tug of war that sees both teams pushing forward in an attempt to reach their opponent’s base to plant explosives. It will take place over four in-game days and multiple maps. Depending on your performance on the first day, you could have plentiful supplies or very few, and these will go down as the fight goes on. By the final day, you will have very limited resources, and you won’t be able to respawn if you’re killed. Grand Operations is intended to replicate real historical battles.
There will also not be micro-transactions that impact gameplay. Dice has chosen to only allow you to buy cosmetic items with “Battlefield Currency,” and it will be introduced after launch. Playing the game gives you Company Coin and it’s used to purchase weapon and vehicle specializations, as well as cosmetic items.
If you preorder Battlefield 5 you have early access to the game, but it also gets you this in-game content.
- Paratrooper Outfit: Choose one of eight Special Soldier Sets to customize your troops.
- Firestorm Ranger Set: Includes goggles, light battle fatigues, and MKIII(S) Elite Combat Dagger.
